CHRISTIE LAZO

Christie Lazo immigrated to Canada with her family at the young age of 7 from the Wari Region of Abya Yala, commonly known as Lima, Peru. She currently resides with her family in Toronto, Canada. She is a dedicated motherscholar of one and a career-driven digital marketing strategist with 10+ years of experience specializing in higher education. Additionally, she is a decolonization and liberation educator with an expertise in parent and childhood education.

Christie Lazo is currently completing her MA Degree is Social Justice Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) at the University of Toronto, where she will graduate with a Collaborative Specialization in Ethnic, Immigration, and Pluralism Studies from the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy. Her overall research explores the intersections of motherhood, ethnicity/culture, migration, decolonization & liberation education. Her overall academic work explores the themes within the decolonization of motherhood and re-imagines futures of liberation for mothers. Her MA thesis presents immigrant mothers as educators and knowledge keepers while exploring the ways in which they provide ethnocultural knowledge to their children as a form of assimilation resistance.

She is the host of the Decolonized Motherhood Podcast which explore how parents, caregivers and educators can make a positive impact on the present and future by raising aware and empowered children. Christie began podcasting in 2018, prior to the “big boom” of podcasting in 2020 with the Vida With Christie Podcast, as she recognized the potential in the medium and wanted to share her parenting insights beyond blogging. The Decolonized Motherhood Podcast reaches international audiences and is recorded in both English and Spanish. Through the episodes, Christie shares her experience breaking intergenerational cycles throughout the many aspects of parenting and as an individual for be a better parent to her child. In addition, Christie speaks with experts with academic, professional and lived experience within the episodes to share a variety of insights within the parenting space.

We as parents have the incredible super power of influencing the future with how we raise our children.

During her downtime, Christie prioritizes spending quality time with her family, travelling (especially home to Peru), hanging out with her daughter, or checking out a trendy new restaurant with her husband on date nights. She also loves to cuddle up with her Aussiedoodle fur-babies while reading a good book or binge watching the latest streaming releases.
